Why Certified Organic Should Be Your First Choice

A study published in July, led by Newcastle University, has proven that organic produce is up to 60 percent higher in a number of key antioxidants than non-organic crops. So whilst organic produce does cost more, you are getting more nutrients per calorie.

Londoners are now spoilt for choice when it comes to cold-pressed juice, but we spoke with Clare Neill, Co-Founder of Radiance, about why certified organic ingredients should be something you strongly consider when opting for a juice cleanse.

Apart from getting more nutrients per calorie and a greater serve of antioxidants, Clare says there are other key benefits to keep in mind.

Fewer Chemicals

Organically farmed crops are grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides, so by choosing organic you’re lowering the toxic load on your body. For example, a recent Environmental Working Group study showed that 98 per cent of apples tested had pesticides on them and there were 48 different pesticides present. That doesn’t sound very detoxifying?!

Genetic Modification (GM)

GM crops are completely banned under organic standards, so by choosing organic you are guaranteeing yourself a GM free diet.

Better for the Environment + Wildlife

Under organic standards, oil-derived pesticides are banned. So farmers create a healthy soil by growing a variety of crops, traditional crop rotation methods and using organic manure and compost. The Soil Association believes this makes land more resilient to climatic changes. It also asserts that organic farming “stores higher levels of carbon in the soil, and as a result if organic farming was common practice in the UK, we could offset at least 23% of agriculture’s current greenhouse emissions.”

In addition, organic farmers have higher welfare standards for any animals they are rearing, and their farms are viewed as a haven for wildlife.

Better for Workers

Workers involved in the mass production of crops are exposed to high levels of chemicals due to modern farming practices, and this can have a serious impact on their health. Choosing organic is a positive step for those workers.

Certified Organic

Organic is a strictly defined and protected term under UK law and any company or body that uses the term without holding current certification is breaking the law. By choosing food products that are certified organic by a recognized body (the Soil Association and the Organic Farmers and Growers are the two main bodies in the UK) it is a guarantee that every ingredient that can be organic is organic.

Radiance is the UK’s first certified organic juice cleanse company, and was founded in 2009 by two best friends, Christina Agnew and Clare Neill, who both believe passionately in the huge benefits of juice cleansing. Clare and Christina wanted to pioneer the UK’s first high quality, nutritional and organic juice cleanse programme, and they wanted to make it available across the mainland UK. And so Radiance was born.
