Dry Body Brushing: A Step-By-Step Guide To Glowing Summer Skin

So you’ve heard that it’s good for you but you’re not quite sure where to start? We asked Sian Sutherland, the Queen of “fit skin”, for a step-by-step guide to dry body brushing; to ensure that this summer skin brightening technique becomes an essential part of your routine in no time!

“Body brushing goes back to Ayurvedic times, so this is something that has been done for thousands of years now . . . [and] is a very important part of keeping your skin in peak performance”, says Sian, Co-founder of Mio Skincare.

It has a number of benefits and is vital in helping your body’s own lymphatic system to do its job. Your skin is incredibly important in removing toxins from the body, and “your lymph system doesn’t actually have a pump so part of what you’re doing is really helping your lymph system work by moving the lymph fluid around”, says Sian.

Body brushing helps to break down fat deposits underneath the skin, so make sure you pay special attention to any stubborn areas of cellulite. Try to do it first thing in the morning before you shower – it only takes two minutes “and you’ll see and feel a visible lasting difference to your skin – it’s going to be brighter, clearer, just glowing with health and happiness and energy”, adds Sian.

Before you get started remember that the key to body brushing is always to brush upwards towards your heart as this is the natural direction in which lymphatic fluid flows through the body.

Step 1.

Start with the soles of your feet, moving upwards along the front and back of your calves and on towards the tops of your legs, paying particular attention to the area behind your thigh.

Step 2.

Next move on to your arms. Starting with the palm of your hand, brush upwards towards your shoulder and into your armpit, this time paying special attention to the area underneath the upper arm where the skin can be softer and looser, as this will help to improve the tonicity of the area

Step 3.

When you reach your stomach aim to brush in a circular motion – try brushing clockwise in small and then larger circles making sure that you cover the entire area (this action also helps with bloating and sluggish digestion)

Step 4.

Brush upwards again along your chest, adjusting the pressure of the brush for more sensitive areas

Step 5.

Use upward strokes to brush along your back – and you’re done!
