Have You Signed Jamie Oliver’s Sugar Tax Petition?

Sugar – it’s the dirty word that’s got everybody talking, but are we taking enough action? Well, the nation’s favourite chef Jamie Oliver doesn’t think so, so he’s on a mission to change things and he needs our help!

According to Jamie, the effect of consuming too much sugar can be devastating to our health – with the little white substance playing a huge part in the rise of obesity and type 2 diabetes around the globe. In fact, he was so astonished by his findings that he decided to film a documentary about the issue.

Sugar Rush, which aired on channel 4 on 3rd September examined sugar’s huge contribution to global health problems and what can be done to curb its consumption. And off the back of his research Jamie has devised a sugar manifesto, which aims to get the Government to roll out the following changes:

INTRODUCE A SUGARY DRINKS TAX

The introduction of a 20p levy per litre on every soft drink containing added sugar

LEGISLATE THE RESPONSIBILITY DEAL

Get the Government to set guidelines that must legally be followed, so that the journey to positive change is an equal playing field for all producers

BAN ALL JUNK FOOD MARKETING ON TV BEFORE 9PM

Get the Government to set better regulations to help protect children

MAKE THE TRAFFIC LIGHT LABELLING SYSTEM MANDATORY FOR ALL FRONT-OF-PACK PACKAGING

To create and enforce one uniform language to display nutritional information on the front of packing for all food and drink products in the UK

SHOW SUGAR CONTENT IN TEASPOONS ON FRONT OF PACK FOR ALL SUGARY DRINKS

To create and enforce an easy way to express how much sugar there is in a can or bottle

We think Jamie’s manifesto is a positive step in the right direction. What do you think? Will you sign the petition? Let us known in the comments below.
