Wearable Art: Laurie Nouchka’s Bold, London-Inspired Leggings

We thought that Yoga in The Shard was quite cool, but with Laurie Nouchka’s bold new activewear collection, you can now wear The Shard as well.

The popularity of loud prints and patterned leggings is increasing as Londoners more widely embrace fitness as a lifestyle – not just a scheduled activity. Laurie Nouchka has certainly embraced this philosophy, by combining artistic talent with her passion for Yoga and fitness, to create a truly unique sports luxe range.

Her SS 15 collection is best described as ‘wearable art’.

“I’m an artist and I also do a lot of Yoga,” says Laurie, who creates architecturally inspired canvases. “Then I started thinking, as I looked at my art… ‘it would be so great to have these off the wall and on legs’.”

Laurie started experimenting with screen printing and then digital printing and when friends asked if they could buy a pair, she quickly realised the demand.

The bold and energising designs will be drawn from two cities each year. The first collection is inspired by four iconic London architectural designs; The Shard, St Pauls, Battersea Power Station, and the view down Bishopsgate.

“I’ve not yet decided which city will inspire the next collection, but it will be either LA, Barcelona or New York,” says Laurie.

As a qualified massage therapist with a particular passion for iconic urban structures, Laurie has sought to cross over the border between fashion and fitness. The bold, linear prints seek to reflect the dynamic rhythms of urban living.

“You could wear them to a yoga class, or to a rave in a field,” Laurie says, about the versatility of her leggings and other pieces. “It’s really about using the body as a canvas,” she adds.

The collection right now includes leggings, crops, a swimsuit and a sporty bikini. But Laurie plans to diversify into other activewear styles, including men’s cycling kit.

Unfortunately, Santa won’t be bringing these beauties in his sleigh. Pre-orders are now being accepted by email, for when stock becomes available in February 2015 (as well as online shopfront).

Laurie Nouchka has exhibited in London, Barcelona and New York and her work can be found in both private and public collections.
