Welltodo Jetsetter: A Healthy City Guide To Mumbai

Mumbai may be known as the ultimate street-food destination with its ghee-ladeN desserts and deep-fried treats, but there are a number of new players changing things up – much to the delight of the city’s health enthusiasts. Rohini Bajekal, Brand Manager of India’s first cold-pressed juice company, RAW Pressery, shares some of her favourite healthy hotspots in the bustling city of Mumbai.

RAW Pressery | Cold Pressed Juice and Cleanses

RAW Pressery is India’s first cold-pressed juice and juice cleanse brand, delivering home each morning to thousands of homes across all Mumbai. Each juice has a specific benefit, whether it’s the aptly termed “LOVE” for its heart-healthy antioxidants – a refreshing blend of pomegranate, watermelon, chia seeds and mint, or the protein-rich LEAN juice with spirulina, kiwi, kale, green apple, cucumber and mint.

Unlike household juicers or blenders, cold-press technology produces no heat and allows no air to be thrust through the juice during production so it retains far more nutrition. The juices are available in set monthly packages and the Cleanse Programme involves replacing your solid food intake with six nutritious, cold-pressed juices  consumed every couple of hours for 1, 2 or 3 days.

RAW tries to get people healthy in the most unconventional places. They recently got customers to have a healthier ride by partnering with Uber and are also available at schools, five-star hotels, hair salons and yoga centres. They’ll be available pan-India by the end of the year with ambitious plans for international expansion too. Watch this space.

“I’ve been traveling to India for work for over a year now and I was ecstatic on my second trip to discover RAW Pressery juices in Nature’s Basket. As a model I travel all over the world and need to maintain my figure. I primarily eat a raw vegan diet and in Bombay originally it was a bit difficult to do this. RAW Pressery cleanses changed that and made it easy to maintain my healthy lifestyle while in India.” – Cait Alexander, Model

Available: Across Mumbai and Pune (Delhi and Bangalore from summer 2015)

Yoga House | Yoga Studio and Cafe

Yoga House has an almost cult-like status in Bandra – Mumbai’s northern suburb dominated by expats, actors, musicians and of course, yoga enthusiasts.

When you feel as though life is getting too hectic, this quaint green bungalow is the perfect place to switch off and tuck into some healthy yet tasty macrobiotic food a la Gwyneth Paltrow. You can’t go wrong with their protein-rich quinoa patty and fresh Multivitamin juice (orange, carrot, apple, lemon and ginger) or one of their salads. There’s also the option to drop into one of their excellent yoga classes – there’s everything from beginners classes to Hatha and Iyengar. Just expect a positively sore body the next day.

The Nutcracker | Healthy Cafe

Although there certainly are some sinful dishes on the menu, this adorable all-day café in Kala Ghoda is the perfect place to refuel after a day’s worth of sightseeing and shopping in the area’s famous boutiques. The menu is full of surprises and homestyle vegetarian favourites such as the Barley and Cracked Wheat Upma (a mix of cracked, wheat, barley and greens topped with roasted nuts). I’m also partial to the Akuri eggs dish made in the traditional Parsi way. Since opening last year, it’s already become a cherished spot and is often frequented by loved up couples in South Mumbai. It just can’t get more wholesome than this tiny eatery.
