Welltodo Jetsetter: A Healthy City Guide To Sydney

For Welltodo founder, Lauren Armes, Sydney is as sacred a city as they come. It holds childhood memories of an effortlessly nourished lifestyle.

In this healthy city guide to Sydney, Lauren shares some of her favourites places to experience the essence of Australia’s wellness culture, and a handful of fitness experiences to help you keep up with Bondi’s best.

Kitchen by Mike | Café and Designer Warehouse

With an ever evolving menu of whole food inspired mains, salads and desserts and a serving style that is reminiscent of a school cafeteria (or as Aussies call it… ‘the tuckshop’). The food here is to die for. Kitchen by Mike celebrates an honest approach to food – stripping back many aspects of a traditional dining experience. Sharing its premises with esteemed Australian Design company Koskela, I don’t know what’s more pleasing, the unique flavours and quality of the food or the rustic aesthetics. If you appreciate delicious healthy food and clean, modern interiors – then Kitchen by Mike is an absolute must!

Try some of my breakfast favourites, like chia pudding, coconut yoghurt and rhubarb compote, or essene toast, black tahini, labneh and honey. KbM is also open for lunch and dessert. Prepare to salivate.

Egg of the Universe | Yoga Studio & Café

This place stole my heart. Entering from a busy high street, you don’t anticipate the beautiful open courtyard with pebbled floor and beautiful spindly tree as a centrepiece – complete with hanging lanterns. The high vibration al fresco café area then leads through to a light and airy yoga studio, making it a truly holistic urban escape. Love at first sight, and then first bite!

Egg of the Universe has a whole foods inspired menu which includes nutritious bone broths, superfood salads, house-made kombucha and a myriad of fermented foods. The perfect way to rejuvenate after a Vinyasa or Yin Yoga class.

The Grounds of Alexandria | Café, Market, Florist and Shop

Once considered a hidden oasis within one of Sydney’s more industrial areas, The Grounds has expanded like wildfire and is now one of the city’s most popular foodie havens. Being two years since my last visit, I was truly shocked. The Grounds has grown into an empire which includes a bustling café (it’s not usual to experience an hour long wait), a florist, farmers market (on holiday weekends) and shop. It resides in what was once a pie factory and is renowned for exceptional coffee and a fresh, seasonal menu. Truly an ‘inner city sanctuary’; killing time is made easy with a luscious garden of vegetables, and even a few farm animals, on site to explore.

Spy on the making of organic fresh bread and enjoy rustic wholesome cuisine featuring herbs and produce grown on site. Try the wild mushroom pappardelle!

Bondi Harvest | Café

A couple of regular Aussie surfing buddies are the brains behind Bondi Harvest– now a lifestyle brand in its own right. Their fun, relaxed approach to food was popularised via YouTube and has since evolved into a restaurant where fans can enjoy a wholesome menu, which celebrates the Bondi culture of seafood and fresh produce. Guy and Mark now have a devout following who appreciate that superfoods are as cool as they are nourishing, and equally as easy to prepare and enjoy. Not the dreamiest of locations (inside a shopping centre), but well worth a visit.

Pressed Juices | Cold-pressed Juice and Smoothies

Pressed Juices is by far Australia’s cold-pressed juicer of choice – with its colourful array of tonics which boast native Australia wild fruits (some not found elsewhere in the world) and brand new menu of artfully packaged salads. The juices and smoothies are guaranteed fresh daily – made in Sydney each morning and air freighted around the country to ensure absolute quality! Pick up a decadent nut mylk, a tropical concoction, a full juice cleanse or a zoodle salad – trust me, you can’t go wrong.

Xtend Barre | Barre Workout

With studios dotted across Sydney, Xtend Barre offers an incredible full body workout. Also, in anticipation of London’s first Xtend Barre flagship studio soon to be opening – I jumped at the opportunity to experience it early… Sydney-style.

Both the workout and the studio itself failed to disappoint. It was an instant time warp – taking me back to after school ballet classes, but with an edgy and dynamic twist. The Xtend workout combines dynamic mat work and use of the barre for a serious burn. When you’ve almost had enough, the vibrant instructors push you to keep going and embrace the challenge. Sydney siders are obsessed with Xtend Barre classes and it’s no surprise – we heard some people come twice a day. A few sessions a week and I would almost guarantee a Bondi beach body.
