Welltodo Jetsetter: A Healthy City Guide To San Francisco

San Francisco is renowned for its healthy vibe. You’ll spot the city’s fitsters kitted out in Lululemon and SoulCycle tees, juice bars on every corner and supermarkets with dedicated cold-pressed sections. In fact, you’ll be surprised at how hard it is to eat badly there (not what you’d usually expect from America, right?).

So when Alexandra Auger from THINK Press touched down in the sunshine state we set her a mission to find the healthiest and hippest spots. We never said the task would be a hard one, but she did break a sweat completing it.

Check out Alex’s top healthy picks here:

Juice Shop | Juicery

Juice Shop’s Union Street store is no bigger than the size of a doorway, but it’s hands down the best juice this side of the atlantic. The nutrient-dense elixirs are bursting with fresh flavour and everything from the environmentally friendly glass bottles to the individual juice tags are a design fiends dream. It’s not cheap, starting at $9 per bottle plus the $2 bottle deposit, but if any juice is worth splashing out on it’s one of these. The standout? Well, that’s got to be the Carrot, Orange, Turmeric and Grapefruit (Citrus 2) – perfect for those sunny Californian days.

SoulCycle | Spinning

We couldn’t forget about America’s infamous spinning studio and San Francisco is home to not one but three of them. The latest venue is located on The Castro and it’s the biggest yet. Housed in the historic Harvey Milk Plaza, the infectious playlists, crazy instructors and signature workouts prove once again why the classes are popular with everyone from David Beckham to Victoria’s Secret models.

Urban Remedy | Raw food and juices

Sweet little picnic benches line the front of this bright and breezy juice bar selling fresh pressed juices (no HPP) along with lots of healthy raw options. Dishes on offer include a raw pesto zucchini and a raw Pad Thai that’s so exquisite it will leave you craving for another, even after you’ve landed back in the UK. But it’s the juice selection that really steals the show. Try the Turmeric, Mint, Raw Honey, Ginger, Lemon and Cardamom tonic – you’ll definitely feel healthier afterwards.

Nike | Women’s fitness apparel

Located on Union Street, this particular Nike store is dedicated to women and boasts an infectious atmosphere. The overbearing ‘trainer wall’ (commonplace in most sports stores) can be a little daunting to navigate, but the knowledgeable staff use a treadmill, an iPad and some clever technology to analyse the style of the customer’s running and pronation to find them the perfect pair of trainers. It’s unlikely you’ll leave empty-handed.

Greens Restaurant | Vegetarian food with a view

Greens Restaurant is renowned for its fantastic vegetarian cuisine in SF and beyond. And with panoramic views across the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin Headlands and the Marina it makes for an unbeatable atmosphere in a trendy spot. Greens philosophy means only the best, freshest ingredients are used and their local sourcing dictates the menu. The 4 course tasting menu is a fun way to explore the mixture of vegetarian food on offer and even the most hardened of meat eaters will agree that a meatless menu such as this one can satisfy any appetite. Pressed Juicery | Premium juices

Pressed Juicery is California’s leading cold pressed juicery and sell thousands (yes thousands!) of juices every single day. The staff at the small Union Street outpost are extremely knowledgeable about juice and can often be found running taster sessions, which is a great way of letting the customer try before they buy. At a very reasonable $6.50 a bottle it’s a great place to grab juice on the go, or if the heat’s getting a bit too much to handle opt for one of the frozen vegan options.
